The Mississippi Bar Association serves the public good by promoting excellence in the profession and in our system of justice. As the first state bar association in the United States, the Bar strives to promote excellence in our system of justice, ensure the highest standards of professional competence and ethical conduct of the membership, increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of our system of justice and the role of the legal profession, promote the availability and delivery of legal services, and provide programs and services to assist members in providing high quality legal services in a professional and cost effective manner.
North Mississippi Rural Legal Services is a nonprofit, Legal Services Corporation organization which provides legal services to low income individuals in the Northern counties of Mississippi.
The Mississippi Center for Legal Services is a nonprofit, Legal Services Corporation organization which provides legal services to low income individuals in the Central and Southern counties of Mississippi.
The Jackson Young Lawyers Association (JYL), strives to strengthen the bond between attorneys in the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area by emphasizing community, education, and service. JYL’s Pro Bono Committee works with MVLP to promote and encourage young attorneys to represent MVLP’s clients. In addition, JYL sponsors the annual Legal Beagle 5K Run/Walk which directly benefits MVLP.
The Capital Area Bar Association (CABA) is an 80-year-old organization of lawyers in metropolitan Jackson, Mississippi. Each Spring, CABA sponsors an Annual Lawyers Golf Outing which directly benefits MVLP.
The University of Mississippi School of Law’s Pro Bono Initiative, lead by Law Professor Deborah Bell, was launched in August of 2011 to address community legal needs and to position law students to put legal education into practice. The program allows students to volunteer for a variety of pro bono experiences in family law. MVLP has partnered with the Pro Bono Initiative on several legal clinics, including Family Law legal clinics at the Law School and other Pro Se legal clinics in various northern counties of Mississippi.
